Charge controllers are used in stand-alone solar electricity systems or SHS to protect the battery from deep discharge (too empty, too much energy used) or overcharging (too full, too much energy coming from the solar panel). An important part of a solar electricity system is the support structure for the panels. The support structure ensures that the panels can be placed with the correct tilt angle towards the sun and they provide a constructive safety. The combination of support structure and panels should be able to withstand wind loads for instance.

There is a large variety of support structures available from small do-it-yourself structures till custom-made structures for large solar electricity systems. Support structures can be made of a metallic frame or a synthetic material.
There are several types of support systems depending on the place where the solar system will be installed. For grid-connected systems this can be a flat or sloped roof support system or a faзade system.
Grid-connected systems are also used as part of the building envelop (building integration). For these applications special support structures are made and developed.
Building integration has become an important aspect of grid-connected solar electricity systems. In order to realise cost reduction, integration can be a helpful tool. Furthermore building integration provides an excellent way to use solar electricity systems to enhance the architecture and show that they can also have other functions than producing electricity.
